The main function of massage therapy is to manipulate the muscles, tendons, ligaments and the connective tissues. During the process, one’s health and well-being are enhanced. The end products of massage include; stress and anxiety reduction, relaxation of muscles, rehabilitation of injuries, reduction of pain and promotion of overall health and wellness of a person. Massage also enhances the blood circulation and tonifies the body system
To meet the above requirements massage aims at manipulating the body tissues, tendons and ligaments. The hands are the tools used by the therapist in order for him or her to identify the patients physical and emotional needs. For a therapist to know the conditions of the tissues and the sources of pain, he or she strokes the massages the patient’s body with hisher hands. Massage uses two major working mechanisms. The mechanical action is the first one, and it occurs when there is the application of pressure and movement of the muscles and the soft tissues. This process cleanses the acids and deposits in these tissues thereby breaking up fibrous tissue and loosening stiff joints.
Reflex method is the second mechanism, and it entails treating a part of the body and other parts of the body are treated in the process. This is made possible since when pressure is applied on one part of the body, it is transmitted to the other parts through the nerve pathways. This mechanism works in such a way that, a therapist can apply pressure on the patients back to treat leg problems. The difference between therapeutic massage and relaxation massage is that therapeutic massage aims at restoring the patients’ health while relaxation massage aims at restoring the person’s happiness.
There are many various types of massage therapy. Some examples are sport, pregnancy, reflexology, deep tissue and hot stone massages. All these are different and since therapeutic needs vary from person-to-person and from day-to-day, different people require different types of massages. A person needs to identify and understand the different procedures applied during the different massage for them to identify the best massage type they can go for.
The results of the gentle massage is the muscle relaxation and a sense of well-being. Stimulation of the nerve endings in the skin results in muscle relaxation. These nerves release endorphins and inhibits stress hormones, thus making the person have a feel-good sensation. Stronger massage intensifies the circulation. They enhance oxygen and nutrient supply to tissues thereby relaxing them. Strong massage works on the lymphatic system which in turn transports the waste products away from the tissues. All in all, massage therapy aims at enhancing the well-being of a person.
