Lightbulbs are devices used for producing light from electricity mostly for lighting dark areas. There exists various types of light bulbs with the common ones being LED light bulbs and compact fluorescent (CFs) light bulbs.LED light bulbs are solid-state lighting devices that are capable of fitting in standard screw-in connections and they utilize LED. The term LED is an abbreviation for light emitting diodes which are employed to produce light in LED light bulbs. The bulbs produce visible light by the use of a semiconductor device every time an electric current pass through it. Fluorescent bulbs filled with argon gas and a small amount of mercury are employed for use in compact fluorescent light bulbs. Argon gas and mercury in the fluorescent lamb are hit by negatively charged electrons produced when the cathode is heated. The excited mercury produces ultraviolet light (UV) which is not visible. The UV light is then passed through a phosphor which causes it to emit more visible light. Mercury is a heavy metal being utilized by CFs light bulbs and very harmful to the human health hence the CFs light bulbs are not environmentally friendly.
The energy efficiency of the LED and CFs light bulbs varies considerably with the LED light bulbs being more efficient. The LED light bulbs do not require time for warming up as they start instantly once electricity is switched on. They are manufactured out of plastic other than the most used glass making them more durable. LED light bulbs are capable of lighting in all weather conditions including cold weather. LED light bulbs minimize on cost as they last longer and use minimum energy as compared to CFs.
When purchasing an LED light bulb, lumen should be considered other than the wattage. Measurement of the brightness given off by a light bulb is what is referred to as lumen while the wattage is the measurement of the amount of energy a light bulb draws. CFs light bulbs draw much more energy than LED light bulbs for the same number of lumens hence LEDs are more energy efficient. Other consideration when purchasing a light bulb is the color need since they have a wide color range and also where the bulb is to be used. A bright yellow color for an LED light bulb is shown by a small number of kelvins which are the unit for measuring color temperature. LED light bulbs require a direct current electrical power hence LED driver is required to convert the alternating current from the power supply.
LED light bulbs have been recently improving with much better efficiencies, outputs and cost hence can be used in all environments. LED light bulbs should be checked for compatibility for use in fixtures during installation as heat build-up can cause light bulb failure or even fire.
